Technical Terms
Wi-Fi
Stands for Wireless Fidelity and refers to certain types of wireless local area network (WLAN). The term was created by the Wi-Fi Alliance, which oversees tests that certify product interoperability. A product that has passed these tests can be labelled "Wi-Fi certified" (a registered trademark).W-LAN
Short for Wireless Local Area Network. Based on IEEE 802.11b. Includes WiFi, WiMAX protocols.ZigBee
ZigBee is a low data rate, two-way standard for industrial and domestic automation networks. It uses small very low-power devices to connect together to form a wireless control web. The standard supports 2.4GHz unlicensed radio bands.HiperLAN - HIgh PErformance Radio LAN
A wireless LAN protocol developed by ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute), similar to Wi-Fi/802.11b. There are two types of Hiper LAN, both operating in the 5GHz band. Hiper LAN/1 provides data-rates up to 20 Mbps and Hiper LAN/2 data rates up to 54 Mbps.Hotspots (Wi-Fi)
Locations with public wireless access points where mobile computers (such as laptops and PDAs) can connect to the Internet using standard WLAN (Wi-Fi) technology. Hotspots are often found in or near public places like railway stations, airports, libraries, universities and colleges, hotels, restaurants, cafés, etc.EEE 802.11
Is a set of standards for wireless local area network (WLAN) computer communication, developed by the IEEE LAN/MAN Standards Committee (IEEE 802) in the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz public spectrum bands.802.11b
Has a maximum raw data rate of 11 Mbit/s and uses the same media access method defined in the original standard. 802.11b products appeared on the market in early 2000, since 802.11b is a direct extension of the modulation technique defined in the original standard. The dramatic increase in throughput of 802.11b (compared to the original standard) along with simultaneous substantial price reductions led to the rapid acceptance of 802.11b as the definitive wireless LAN technology.802.11g
This works in the 2.4 GHz band (like 802.11b), but uses the same OFDM based transmission scheme as 802.11a. It operates at a maximum physical layer bit rate of 54 Mbit/s exclusive of forward error correction codes, or about 19 Mbit/s average throughout[citation needed]. 802.11g hardware is fully backwards compatible with 802.11b hardware.802.11n
is a proposed amendment to the standard to significantly improve network throughput over previous standards, such as 802.11b and 802.11g, with a significant increase in the maximum raw (PHY) data rate from 54 Mbit/s to a maximum of 600 Mbit/s. The current state of the art supports a PHY rate of 300 Mbit/s, with the use of 2 spatial streams at a channel width of 40 MHz. Depending on the environment, this may translate into a user throughput (TCP/IP) of 100 Mbit/s.
802.11n is expected to be finalized in November 2009, although many "Draft N" products are already available.
